Toddler’s First Dental Visit: What Actually Happens

Your child’s first dental visit is a big milestone. Maybe you’ve been meaning to schedule it for months. Or maybe you just realized their second birthday is coming up and you still haven’t made the call. Either way, you probably have questions. Will they cry? Will the dentist do anything scary? What if they won’t sit still?

We hear these worries all the time at Brookwood Dental Associates. And we want to put your mind at ease. Here’s exactly what happens at a toddler’s first dental visit, and why it’s usually much easier than parents expect.

Toddler's First Dental Visit: What Actually Happens in Lansdale, PA

When Should The First Visit Happen?

By age one, or within six months of the first tooth coming in. That’s what the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends.

We know that sounds early. But early visits aren’t about doing much work. They’re about getting your child used to the office, the chair, and the friendly faces. When kids start young, they grow up thinking the dentist is just a normal part of life, not something to fear.

What Happens During The Visit

First, we’ll ask you some questions:

  • Has your child had any dental issues?
  • Any injuries?
  • Do they use a pacifier or suck their thumb?
  • How are they eating and sleeping?

This helps us understand the whole picture.

Then comes the exam. Your child doesn’t have to sit alone in the big chair. We often do what’s called a lap exam. You sit in the chair, your child sits on your lap facing you, and then they lean back into our dentist’s lap. You’re holding them the whole time. They feel safe. We get a great view of their teeth.

We’ll count their teeth, check for early signs of cavities, and look at their gums, tongue, and jaw. We’ll also check how their bite is developing. For most toddlers, this part takes just a few minutes.

What We’re Looking For

At this age, we’re not just checking for cavities. We’re looking at the big picture:

  • Are teeth coming in on schedule?
  • Is there any crowding or spacing that might need attention later?
  • Are there signs of early decay? (This can happen with bottle feeding or constant snacking.)
  • Is the jaw growing normally?

If we spot anything, we’ll talk with you about it right away. If everything looks great, we’ll tell you that too, and give you tips to keep it that way.

Tips To Make It Easier

A few things can make the first visit smoother:

  • Schedule for the morning: Kids are usually happiest and most cooperative earlier in the day. Avoid nap time if you can.
  • Keep it low-key: Don’t talk about it like it’s a big deal. Just say, “We’re going to see the tooth doctor today. They’re going to count your teeth!”
  • Bring a comfort item: A favorite stuffed animal or blanket can help.
  • Stay calm yourself: Kids pick up on our nerves. If you’re relaxed, they will be too.
  • Don’t bribe or threaten: Avoid saying things like “If you’re good, you get a prize” or “If you don’t behave, the dentist will be mad.” We’re never mad. We’re here to help.

What Comes Next

After the first visit, we’ll recommend coming back every six months. Those regular checkups help us catch small problems before they become big ones. They also keep your child comfortable with the dentist as they grow.
