Losing a tooth can feel like a big deal. Maybe it happened suddenly from an accident or injury. Or maybe it’s been a slow process, with a tooth getting looser over time. Either way, you’re left with a gap that doesn’t feel right. You might wonder: what do I do now? Is it worth replacing one tooth? And if so, what’s the process actually like?
At Brookwood Dental Associates in Lansdale, we hear these questions all the time. And we want you to know that dental implants are a straightforward, predictable solution.
What Is A Dental Implant, Really?
People often use “implant” to mean the whole replacement tooth. But technically, the implant itself is the small titanium post that goes into your jawbone.
Think of it as a new root for your missing tooth. Over time, your jawbone fuses with that titanium post, a process called osseointegration. Once that happens, the implant becomes a permanent part of your mouth. Then we attach a crown, bridge, or denture on top, and you have a tooth that looks, feels, and works just like the real thing.
Step One: Your Consultation
This is where we figure out if implants are right for you. Most people are good candidates, but we need to check a few things.
We’ll use our cone beam CT scanner to take a 3D image of your jawbone. That shows us the density and shape of the bone, and where your nerves and sinuses are located. We want to make sure there’s enough bone to support the implant. If there’s not, we’ll talk about options like bone grafting.
We’ll also review your medical history and talk about your goals. This is your chance to ask every question that comes to mind. No question is too small or too silly.
Step Two: The Placement Appointment
This is the day the implant goes in. Don’t worry, you’ll be completely numb. Most patients tell us they felt pressure but no pain. The whole procedure usually takes about an hour for one implant.
Our doctor makes a small opening in your gum, prepares the bone site, and carefully places the titanium post. Then we close the gum tissue over it or place a healing cap on top.
Afterward, we’ll give you aftercare instructions. Expect some mild swelling or discomfort for a few days. Over-the-counter pain medication usually does the trick.
Step Three: The Healing Period
Your bone needs time to grow around the implant and fuse with it. This takes about three to six months. During this time, you’ll eat soft foods, keep the area clean, and come back for a follow-up check to make sure everything’s healing properly.
We know this waiting period can feel long. But it’s what makes implants so strong and durable. You want that bone to lock onto the post like it belongs there.
Step Four: The Final Restoration
Once your implant is fully healed, we bring you back to attach the visible part: the crown, bridge, or denture.
We’ll take a digital scan of your implant and surrounding teeth. Using that scan, we design your custom restoration to match the shape and color of your natural teeth. With our CEREC technology, we can even create some restorations right in our office the same day. When it’s ready, we simply screw or cement it onto the implant.
Are Implants Worth It?
Implants last for decades with good care. They don’t get cavities. They keep your jawbone healthy because the bone is getting stimulated just like it did with a natural root. And they don’t rely on neighboring teeth for support like bridges do. Plus, they just feel like your own teeth. You can eat what you want and smile without thinking about a gap.
