While COVID-19 may prevent you from seeing your dentist in Lansdale for your regular preventive care visits, you can still do your part at home to protect the health of your teeth and gums. However, good oral care goes beyond just brushing. Read on to find out what common dental care mistakes you should avoid making to maintain your oral health.

#1 – Not Flossing

Toothbrushes can keep the exterior surfaces of your teeth clean, but they have a hard time reaching the spaces between them. If you don’t floss, you’re likely leaving bits of food between your teeth for hours, allowing bacteria to break it down and cause the buildup of plaque.

#2 – Ignoring Your Tongue When Brushing

The bacteria that live on your teeth can also live on your tongue. If you don’t take the time to clean them off, they will accumulate, causing bad breath and accelerating the pace of tooth decay.

#3 – Using An Old Toothbrush

When your toothbrush is new, the bristles can easily make contact with your teeth to keep them clean. Over time, they will bend outward or fall out of your toothbrush entirely, making your daily brushing less effective. To combat this, the American Dental Association recommends replacing your brush every three months.

#4 – Brushing Too Hard

Brushing aggressively can wear down the enamel layer on your teeth as well as the gum tissue around them. This can potentially lead to small fractures and sensitivity issues in the future. Try brushing gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

#5 – Using Only Mouthwash

Many mouthwashes are very effective at killing the bad bacteria in your mouth. However, relying on only them to keep your teeth healthy is a bad idea. Rinsing your teeth with mouthwash doesn’t get rid of the food debris trapped between your teeth. It’s important to use it in combination with regular brushing and flossing.

#6 – Snacking on Sugar Filled Foods

All snacks are not created equal when it comes to dental health. The ones that are filled with sugars, like candy and dried fruit, aid bacteria in the process of weakening your teeth. The same goes for beverages likes sodas and energy drinks. Limit their role in your diet to protect your teeth.

#7 – Not Drinking Enough Water

When you don’t drink water regularly, you’re making it easier for bacteria to damage your teeth. Water washes away the sugars and acids that get left behind in your mouth after a meal. It promotes the production of saliva, your body’s natural defense against bacteria. Additionally, water can contain compounds such as fluoride that can actually make your teeth more resistant to decay over time.

Dental home care doesn’t have to be complex to be effective. Take some time to find out if any of these bad dental habits are currently a part of your life. Do your best to avoid them, and you’ll likely increase the longevity of your smile.
